Top Gun 2 and Air Combat San Diego
We hope you have heard about Top Gun 2 coming out July 2019. Top Gun: Maverick will bring many of the old characters together such as Val Kilmer and Tom Cruise back but no one knows about the plot yet. Young star Miles Teller will play "Gooses" son. Some pilots speculate that drones will be part of the action, but one can only expect well crafted and energetic aviation scenes.
Last month, Tom Cruise started filming at North Island Naval Air Station and was seen driving around a sport bike on the runway. They shut down part of the base for the days filming. No other information is known, they are keeping tight lipped about the details. Some of our military pilots gave us those updates.
Maverick goes on an Air Combat adventure with San Diego Sky Tours. The biplane ride in tandem with another aircraft is exactly the same experience as the WWI fighter pilots such as the Red Baron.
The Air Combat San Diego brand will work closely with Jerome Leblanc "Maverick" and his appearances around San Diego. Jerome is from Montreal, Canada and makes his living as a perfect, or better than perfect, character of 'Maverick'. None of the usual cockiness, but tons of hilarious content. Maverick can be seen at the Sky Tours hangar at Montgomery Field, the USS Midway and the Kansas City Barbecue. Maverick's good looks and funny demeanor always bring life and stir up a good time for all. Feel free to ask him for photos and selfies.
If you schedule an Air Combat Experience Flight, we can usually get Maverick to stop by for photos and you can enjoy a beer after your flight. If you have a group event at our hangar or a team building session with us, we always invite the Maverick to share in the good times.

We are always asked what goes on with our Air Combat Experience flights. Yes, it is very unique and we are the only company to offer this sort of adventure in the world. After you arrive to the airport, you will be met by one of our pilots in the Gibbs Flight Service Lounge and they will bring you out to the Sky Tours hangar. The aircraft should be serviced, preflighted and ready to go, the pilots will make you don a flight suit and pair up with your pick of airplane and combat pilots. All our pilots are extremely experienced aviators. All Combat pilots are military, either Air Force, Navy or Marine Corps. Visit with and learn about our biplane pilots. After you are paired up, bring either 2 or 3 persons for your group otherwise you may be unfairly matched up against a Top Gun instructor for your first dogfight!
After you are settled in uniform, the team will present a military style combat brief which consists of formation and mission details, a short history of WWI combat aircraft and the pilots, and basic air combat tactics. The tactics are easy to visualize with the aircraft sticks and the interesting explanations by the biplane instructors. You will learn a lot and experience even more. After your 1 hour basic training, you will strap in and practice what you learned!
The biplanes will start up in tandem and taxi out to start the mission. You will benefit from the formation take off experience. Most airline pilots have never even experienced anything like this. After takeoff, the formation of two biplanes will head out over the water along the shores of La Jolla and travel northward along the coast. Another benefit is the amazing views flying low level in an open cockpit along the North County beaches. At some point, the flight will split up and start a little tail chase to get you familiar with maneuvering the aircraft and learning about 'leading' and 'lagging' the target to get the other aircraft in position. A victory is where you get the other aircraft in your sites for a couple seconds, your pilot instructor will work with you to achieve this goal. No aviation experience necessary!

Following the warmups and tail chase, you will go 'head to head' with your opponent in a 1 versus 1 style air combat duel. The Top Gun pilot you are flying with has tremendous experience and can help you through the entire adventure. You will experience intense climbs, turns, and military style maneuvers. The Red Baron practiced these same maneuvers over France in 1917-18.
